Day:214, Words:214

The midnight sun is no more. At around 11pm, the street lights switch on. Considering the amount of rain, fog, cloud and cold northern winds that the region has experienced this summer, it is a depressing thought that the days are quickly becomming shorter. However, the sun provided some rare warmth today as the mecury topped the magical 20 degree mark, enough motivation for teenagers to bathe in the chilly fjord and for pensioners to take their tops off.

Meanwhile in Alta, the salmon fishermen were miffed when a number of seals frolicked nearby, scaring off all potential catches. There were calls for the legalisation of seal shooting, which received more support than one might think.

The school year is two short weeks away and the ongoing Nuvsvåg school closure debate is continuing. Some families have moved, teachers have taken up positions in Hammerfest and others have investigated the possibility of home schooling. One dedicated teacher has offered his services privately as an alternative to sending kids on a three hour daily boat and bus trip.

If the move to close the school was motivated by finances, there has certainly been a glut of time, energy and money spent since the announcement and there is still a lot of questions waiting to be answered.
