A snow avalanche took six hikers in nearby Kåfjord and was responsible for at least one death. Such tragedies are unfortunately a part of life up here and Øksfjord has had its fair share of heartache. Despite the safety measures, such as mountain barriers and tunnels, these disasters occur all too often. It was only months ago when the main road was closed due to a massive boulder, that had ironically rolled itself onto the open section of road.
